ABOUT Survivor Wellness

Survivor Wellness is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1997 as Cancer Wellness House with the mission of providing cancer wellness and integrative health care services and support for cancer survivors, their family members, caregivers and loved ones in a home-like setting. We are a cancer care community, a sanctuary in the heart of the city.

WHY are we called "SURVIVOR WELLNESS"?

• We provide cancer WELLNESS and integrative health care programming.

• Programming is available to cancer SURVIVORS - anyone who has received a cancer diagnosis, including not only the individual who received the diagnosis, but also their family members, caregivers and loved ones. According to the NCI, 2021, these individuals are collectively referred to as "cancer survivors".

AS SOON AS YOU RECEIVE A DIAGNOSIS, you are a CANCER SURVIVOR. YOUR CAREGIVERS ARE ALSO SURVIVORS.

• Programming is provided free of charge to enrolled members, with some services also available at a reduced cost to enrolled members.

Survivor Wellness does not discriminate on the basis of race, culture, gender, sexuality, nation of origin, disability, or age. Survivor Wellness actively welcomes members of marginalized groups  with open arms, with the understanding that these individuals are subject to social determinants of health (SDOH) that lead to an increased risk and likelihood of developing cancer. In short: Survivor Wellness welcomes all cancer survivors (as defined above), including those who belong to marginalized groups such as the LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities.

• Programming includes: group and individual health counseling and support; individual integrative health care therapies (massage therapy, reiki, yoga therapy, etc.), group classes (yoga, qigong, mindfulness, etc.), community events, and more.

Programs are delivered at our beautiful campus located in two historic homes in central Salt Lake City with lush vegetable and flower gardens, a yoga/movement studio and event space, and a private counseling cottage. View the buildings and gardens here.

We accept anyone with a cancer diagnosis, without any demonstration of financial need. Just as the course of cancer cannot be predicted, neither can the effects of diagnosis and treatment - physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, social, and financial.  Programming is intended to alleviate the burdens and increase wellness in all of these areas.

As our clients say, "This place heals the things the doctors cannot."

Programming at Survivor Wellness is funded by foundations, businesses, and individuals like you. To support Survivor Wellness, click here!

We provide an estimated 1000 user days per year, and around 65% of our clientele live at or below the AMI. We are extremely grateful for the support of our donors and granting organizations.

WELLNESS PARTNERS are small businesses operated by the same volunteer professionals who provide the free services at Survivor Wellness. In addition to serving the general public, these small businesses offer reduced cost services for our enrolled members on a first-come, first-served basis at our location. Appointment must be booked via the small business itself.

The WELLNESS INSTITUTE is the education and training branch of Survivor Wellness, providing opportunities for interns, students and trainees an opportunity to offer community-based services to our members while developing their skills.

All donors and members of the community are encouraged to attend our annual event, SURVIVORS AT THE SUMMIT, which has been held continuously since 1997. We celebrate the triumph of the human spirit by journeying to a summit carrying yellow Tribute Flags honoring those who have been impacted by cancer.  Please join the community for this remarkable day in the mountains, held each summer. Register early - the 27th Annual Survivors at the Summit will be held on August 4 at Brighton Resort!

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS:

This organization was established as Cancer Wellness House by Tika Beard and a host of courageous members and dedicated caregivers of the cancer community in Salt Lake City, Utah. The current staff and administration of Survivor Wellness offers our deepest respect and gratitude to these trailblazers.

Our organization honors the history of Holy Cross Hospital, the Montgomery Family, and those who work courageously to serve those living with cancer in the Salt Lake City area.

We acknowledge that Survivor Wellness sits on the unceded ancestral ground and homelands of the indigenous Ute, Paiute, Shoshone and Goshute tribes, the original stewards of this land. As we embrace these spaces, we gather in community to heal, connect, cultivate safety and ask for continued blessings of guidance, fortitude, abundance and strength for all who come through these healing spaces. We remain conscious of and indebted to the sacred relationship the indigenous peoples held with this land before us, and are committed  to caring  for the land that we now occupy, as did those who came before us. Thank you to those who came before.

Survivor Wellness is still located at 59 S 1100 E, same as it ever was. The "59 House" houses our offices and most support groups, and is open for visits most weekdays. The "57 House" houses the healing rooms, and is only open to those who are receiving services in the house.

You are welcome to stop by for a visit. We are generally in the office from 10-6 daily; however, it's best to call ahead or contact us via the form below. We look forward to seeing you.
